My pastoral year at the Church of the Assumption, Petaling Jaya, has been a journey of discovering Christ through people. When I first arrived, I felt both excited and nervous. The parish was active, with people from different backgrounds, and mindsets, as well as many different ministries. I wondered how I would fit in and whether I would be able to serve the people well.
Gradually, I began to experience the parish as a family. Serving at Mass, participating in BEC gatherings and prayer groups became more than duties. They became moments where I encountered Christ. One particular experience that stayed with me was conversation with a parishioner. At first, I was unsure of what to say because I did not know the person well. I thought that, as a seminarian, I needed to say something meaningful or encouraging. But as we sat together, I realised that sometimes people do not need many words. They simply need someone who is willing to listen and be present. I realised that pastoral ministry is not about having all the answers, but about making space for another person’s story and allowing
Christ to meet us there.
Another joyful experience was meeting the young people. Their energy, openness, and willingness to serve reminded me that the Church is alive. I also had the opportunity to accompany the KUBM (Komuniti Umat Bahasa Malaysia) community and volunteering at TAP (The Ark Place), a learning centre that provides educational support for underprivileged children. These experiences opened my eyes to the many faces of the Church and helped me recognise Christ’s presence in different
people and situations.
There were also moments when I felt tired, unsure, and challenged. Yet, through these moments, I learned that joy does not mean everything is easy. True Christian joy comes from knowing that Christ walks with us. I entered my pastoral year thinking that I was coming to serve the people, but I slowly realised that God was also sending the people to form me.
